Just about everyone knows that gypsy months destroy trees, but few of us worry about them until they are munching on the green leaves in our own backyards. In recent years, the two-inch-long caterpillars have caused billions of dollars of damage in the East and are now spreading to forests in the South, the Midwest, and all the way to California. Worse yet, a new species of Asian gypsy moth has just arrived from Russia and established a foothold in the Northwest, where it threatens some of America's most valuable timber.
