Blink and you just might miss it.

Driving down busy Route 31 in South Elgin, Jana Drake says it's easy to bypass the Silver Ribbon, a jewelry store she owns that specializes in antique jewelry, etchings and scrimshaw, one of few art forms believed to have its roots in the United States, she says.

Scrimshaw has become a lost art, Drake said.

One of the main reasons is that it's a long, tedious process that involves carving designs into a piece of ivory or ivory-like material, and then dyeing the carved drawings with India ink, she explained.
