Rhode Island pension fund acquires vacant Providence building.

Sep. 28--BOSTON -- The Rhode Island pension fund yesterday began weighing options for disposing of a vacant downtown Providence office building, including selling it to the state at the request of the General Assembly's leaders.

The pension fund will take ownership of the property -- known as the American Express building -- based on a court order entered yesterday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Boston. The pension fund, though, does not want the building and is talking with more than one group interested in buying the property, said William R. Baldiga, a lawyer with Brown Rudnick Berlack Israels, who is representing the pension fund.
