Challenging claims to the contrary, priest-sociologist Andrew M. Greeley says sexual abuse of minors by Roman Catholic clergy is widespread in the U.S., involving between 2,000 and 4,000 priests and more than 100,000 victims. That assertion is the basis of an article by Greeley in the March 20-27 issue of America, a biweekly Jesuit magazine. In an interview Greeley, a priest of the Chicago archdiocese, said he based his projections on a review of cases by an official church commission appointed by Cardinal Joseph L. Bernardin.
