DEEPA MEHTA has long been one of the more controversial figures in both the Canadian and Indian film industries. One of the first women to carve out a significant career in Canadian film, and certainly the first Indo--Canadian woman to do so, Mehta has also drawn fire in both Canada and India for her choice of subject matter.
