WTO to examine EU sugar quota declassification: the European Union is to come under scrutiny at the World Trade Organisation for its decision to "de-classify" some 1.892 million tonnes of excess domestic sugar production for export.(Diasagreement over compliance)

Australia, Brazil and Thailand have asked for the EU decision to be discussed at a meeting of the WTO's Dispute Settlement Body next Tuesday.

The three countries initiated successful dispute proceedings against the EU's sugar regime, which the WTO found was "cross-subsidizing" EU sugar exports through high guaranteed prices for internal sugar production.

The three countries are not currently proposing to challenge the EU declassification move through new dispute proceedings, although they warned that Brussels was undermining the WTO system by boosting subsidies that have been declared illegal by the global trade body.
