Supply and demand meet in mortgage-backed mkt. (commercial mortgage-backed securities market)

The market in commercial mortgage-backed securities has matured due to an increase in market structure and stability brought about by the Resolution Trust Corp (RTC). The RTC packages and sells securities backed by the commercial mortgages the federal government has taken over as part of the savings and loan bailout. The presence of the RTC in the market has introduced efficiency and predictability in the market. Of the $8.3 billion in mortgage-backed securities rated by Moody's Investor Services, 68% is backed by the RTC.
