Purpose. The objective of this study was to investigate possible differences in barrier efficacy from aerosol exposure to clinicians during routine dental prophylaxis. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires that masks be worn in combination with eye protection devices (goggles, glasses with solid side shields, or chin-length face shields) during dental procedures. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Dental Association (ADA) recommend that dental professionals wear either a mask and goggles or a face shield alone.
