An unexpected twist in a university class assignment pretty much guarantees that the red snapper you bought for dinner last night wasn't red snapper at all.
According to a 2004 issue of Science News professor Peter Marko wanted his University of North Carolina marine biology graduate students to learn how to use DNA to identify marine species. He gave his students 22 samples of "red snapper" filets purchased from vendors in Illinois and Wisconsin, as well as Delaware, Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida. Marko's intent: verify the obvious; they're red snapper.
