Many actors shy away from being typecast as gay.
Not Bill Brochtrup.
For the past eight seasons the openly gay actor played television's longest-running gay character - desk jockey "Upstairs" John Irvin on "NYPD Blue," in a role that series creators Steven Bochco and David Milch fashioned for him.
Now he's in Boston playing one-half of a gay couple in "Theater District," TV writer Richard Kramer's ("Thirtysomething," "My So-Called Life") play probing the changing nature of the American family. SpeakEasy Stage Companyopens its production at the Boston Center for the Arts today.
