"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." This familiar quote is not from a French republican's complaint about Napoleon nor a Russian revolutionary's indictment of the Czar. It was an English Catholic, commenting on the papacy and its arrogation of power in the late 19th century.
Last weekend, Catholics in Newton, with the rest of the community looking on in disbelief, experienced such an exercise of raw power.
