LA CROSSE -- A recluse accused of stuffing his dead mother in a freezer and shooting at neighbors after they came to his door pleaded no contest in a deal with prosecutors Friday.
District Attorney Scott Horne said he'll recommend 52-year-old Philip Schuth serve eight years in prison, far less than the 80 years he would get according to the maximum sentences laid out in the charges he faces under the plea deal.
Horne defended his recommendation, saying he had talked with the neighbors and factored in Schuth's hermit-like existence, which left him unable to deal with life's "minor conflicts."
