When the first "100 Most Influential Black Americans" list was published 30 years ago, it contained the names of five congressmen, two U.S. government administrators and one comedian,* Since that time, the nature of Black influence has changed, and the number of Black influence-wielders has grown appreciably. There are 39 members of Congress on the 1993 list, a 680 percent increase since 1963.
