Talk about timing. Just as congressional interest in industrial loan companies intensified with the release of a government report questioning their regulation, former Comptroller of the Currency John D. Hawke Jr. joined the board of one.
Last month Mr. Hawke, now a partner in Arnold & Porter LLP, became a member of the board of Merrill Lynch Bank USA, the brokerage's ILC.
Mr. Hawke said there is nothing "startling" about a former bank regulator joining the board of an ILC. "It's a very substantial, very well-run institution," he said.
