The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (Fraunhofer IIS), inventor of the MP3 digital audio format that launched the Internet music boom, has partnered with Thomson to introduce an MP3 Surround hardware player that can be integrated into consumer entertainment gear such as home theater receivers, DVD players and portable audio players. The technology enables 5.1 channel surround-quality sound for Webbased music distribution, broadcasting systems, PC-related audiovisual or gaming applications, consumer electronics and automotive systems.
