Taylor, Alan Writing Early American History Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press 263 pp., $39.95, ISBN 0-8122-3883-4 Publication Date: June 2005
Writing Early American History is a collection of book reviews published in the New Republic since 1996 by Alan Taylor, of the University of California--Davis, who has authored three other books, including American Colonies (2001). In addition to providing detailed analyses of books on American history to the mid-nineteenth century, the twenty-four reviews, each approximately 5,000 words in length, offer insights into the history of writing early American history and historians' methods for investigating the past.
