"Marc Chagall and the Jewish Theater" is a small jewel of an exhibition that documents one of the most exciting finds in recent art history. Chagall's legendary murals of 1920 for the Jewish Chamber Theater in Moscow had been rolled up in storage since 1950 in the State Tretiakov Gallery in Moscow. Chagall himself was not even sure they had survived until, in 1973, he returned to the Soviet Union for the first time since 1922 and signed the murals at the museum. In 1989 they were restored and in 1991 exhibited at the Fondation Pierre Gianadda (which sponsored the restoration) in Martigny, Switzerland.
