Oct. 3--Saputo of Montreal has announced plans to close its cheese production site in Whitehall Township and lay off 115 employees.
The plant, off the rear section of the Lehigh Valley Dairies building on MacArthur Road, will stop making cheese Oct. 29 and end production of other milk products by March, the company said.
A spokeswoman for Saputo said the company is thinking about the employees now and a decision on the sale of the plant will come later.
Costs connected to the closure will be about $1.6 million after tax. But the company expects annual after-tax savings of about $3 million.
