How they arrived
* Atlanta (90-72, first place in the NL East) played steady baseball, taking charge of the division by winning the final seven games of July. The Braves matched Houston for the best home record in the NL at 53-28. The Braves found young help when injuries beset the team, including forcing four of the five starting pitchers on the disabled list (Mike Hampton four times).
