A decade-old Maine program designed to move out-of-school adults into college has not only succeeded in graduating students, but has spawned 25 other similar programs in New England.
Located in a converted strip mall on the University of Maine's Ellsworth campus, the Sumner Adult Education Transition-to-College program aims to make it easier for working adults with a GED or high school diploma to go back to school.
The typical participant is 28 to 45 and has a background ranging from single parent to veteran to college dropout. Provided at no cost, the program targets adults who need help getting ready for college.
