I recall a homily years ago that raised the question: What if someone were able to place some hidden gas in our atmosphere, something in the very air that we breathe, that could brainwash us and make us unconsciously submissive to everything that person wanted? What if we were slowly turned into robots who thought we were making our own free human decisions, but who were actually being led by some outside influence? I see the role of culture in human lives as something like this; it has a much greater influence in our lives than we realize.
