Object-oriented database management systems (OODBMSs) are outgrowing their reputation as programmers' tools. Today, only programmers developing proprietary systems buy OODBMSs. John Slitz, vice president of marketing at the Massachussetts-based Object Management Group, predicts that over the next 18 months, a new generation of low-cost OODBMSs, along with end-user products that make it easier to create objects, will transform this type of database management systems into consumer products.
