For a software company, introducing users to a radically different spin on a familiar application is hard; regaining lost market share is even harder. In an attempt to do both, Lotus Development Corp. has released Improv, its ultra-easy-to-use Windows spreadsheet, with a tempting three-month $99 introductory offer.
The Cambridge, Mass. software company has seen its hold on the $1-billion spreadsheet market shrink from 75 percent in 1991 to 47 percent in 1992, largely due to a late and less-than-overwhelming entry into the Windows arena.
