Suzanne Brenner's book is an engaging account of the making of modernity and its reversals--the 'making of the unmodern'--in the batik-producing district of Laweyan, Solo, Java. Brenner arrived in 1986 to find a fading batik industry, a relic of what she describes as a 'once modern' past, defeated by mass production of imitation batik.
