On April 15 and 17, 1991, a diluted paraquat mixture was applied, by helicopter, to two agricultural fields near a community in the Hollister, California, area. Drift from these applications passed directly over the community residences and the associated complex, which includes gasoline service stations, restaurants, a recreational narrow-gauge railway, and an outdoor barbecue pavilion and eating area. The paraquat drift was identified visually from the pattern of brown-spotted and damaged foliage that extended from the treated fields through approximately 1/2 mile of neighboring cropland, directly over the community, and approximately 1/3 mile beyond the community.
