Students at Dooley School in Schaumburg recently got a crash course in the manual labor and educated guesses that often constitute the field of archaeology.
Creating objects that had specific meanings and uses in fictional civilizations, the students then buried them in the sands of the school's two baseball diamonds for other classes to find and figure out.
The objects were to reflect the pillars of these made-up societies - pillars all societies have. These include themes, economics, the arts, politics, family, food, clothing and recreation, sixth-grade teacher Christine Havlovic said.
