Article: Erie County, N.Y., Tries to Avoid Control Board.

The Erie County Fiscal Stability Authority will today weigh the four-year financial plan that legislators in the distressed, western New York county submitted in an effort to avoid having its fiscal operations put under a control board.

The existing seven-member oversight authority has been in advisory mode since state lawmakers created it in June as County Executive Joel Giambra and Erie County lawmakers struggled to close a nearly $118 million gap in its roughly $1.1 billion 2005 budget. The state legislation set Oct. 1 as the deadline for the county to present a fiscal blueprint that would restore the county's fiscal stability and integrity.
