Operating systems are the heart and soul of any computing environment, and for several reasons, operating systems are at the very center of an earnest battle for the hearts and minds (and dollars) of micro-computing professionals this year. Just as the demand for more powerful hardware has continued to grow, users are beginning to demand more from an operating system than simple support for individual applications. Today's wish list includes system-to-system communications, transparent application-to-application data exchange, multiple concurrent applications, a linear memory scheme with application protection, virtual memory, and, perhaps, support for multiple processors.
