The term maintenance has always been something of a misnomer when used to describe the continuous process of updating and enhancing application systems. The word connotes notions of repair, servicing and upkeep. In reality, only about 25% of what we call software maintenance falls into the category of repair, in the same sense that we take in an automobile for repair because something is wrong with it.
The other 75% of software maintenance activities constitute something different. Of this percentage, about a third can be classified as adaptive changes, or those required for the application to accommodate new technology. The remainder centers around ...
