The new dynamics of the central European marketplace and a hot new competitor in the region proved devastating for Fiat Auto.
Fiat Auto's sales in central Europe fell 52 percent in the first half, far exceeding the region's overall 4 percent decline during the same period.
Fiat blames the drop on its sales restructuring in the region. A Fiat executive told Automotive News Europe that the automaker was hurt when it cut its sales of self-registered cars in central Europe. He said he expects the new Fiat Punto to turn around the brand's sales in the region. The car debuts in central Europe early next year.
