When the Toronto Blue Jays needed a manager for the Triple-A Syracuse SkyChiefs following the 2003 season, they dipped into Double-A for Marty Pevey.
Now that Pevey has been hired as Toronto's first base coach, the Blue Jays could turn to their Double-A team again to fill the SkyChiefs' void.
Mike Basso, the manager of the Blue Jays' Double-A club in Manchester, N.H., is the leading candidate from within Toronto's minor league system to replace Pevey as the SkyChiefs' skipper in 2006. It's also possible the Blue Jays will look outside their organization for a manager with Triple-A or major league experience.
