Thus wrote Leonard Woolf in Growing, the volume of his autobiography dealing with his years in Ceylon. A colonial administrator, Woolf arrived with 90 volumes of Voltaire's works and a wire haired terrier named Charles, who promptly urinated on a local. If the man didn't appear unduly concerned, it was probably, as Christopher Ondaatje points out, because this was a reality of imperial life for the locals.
