Several recent surveys indicate that tests of general mental ability (GMA) and tests of specific cognitive abilities (e.g. numerical, verbal, spatial, etc.) are increasingly popular amongst employer organizations in the UK for selection and assessment purposes (e.g. Hodgkinson & Payne, 1998; Keenan, 1995; Ryan, MacFarland, Baron, & Page, 1999; Salgado & Anderson, 2002; Salgado, Ones, & Viswesvaran, 2001).
