As the competitive global environment puts increasing pressure on organizations to adapt, the interest in transformational leadership and all of its ramifications has grown. Survival of the organization in the 21st century requires more change, and more change requires more leadership. Kotter (1990) has likened the current business environment to wartime conditions, and notes that individuals 'cannot be managed into battle, but instead must be led' (p. 106).
