IRAQ - Kurdish-Shi'ite Split Over Kirkuk Frozen.

At the London news conference President Talabani on Oct. 6 said the Kurdish dispute over the oil-rich zone of Kirkuk with Shi'ite Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Ja'fari and a Kurdish call for the latter's resignation have been "resolved". But APS sources on Oct. 8 said the dispute over Kirkuk was just suspended until after Oct. 15. Leaders of the Kurdish and Shi'ite Arab blocs met on Oct. 3-5 and eventually ironed out a range of differences on issues including Kurdish demands for more control in Kirkuk.
