The audio hardware that's in consumers' homes has far superior audio capabilities than what the recording industry is delivering with its increasingly antiquated CDs. It may be the first time ever that software--music--has trailed hardware--home audio systems--so badly. In every other technology change, it's been the consumer's desire for content, for software, that has forced them to upgrade to so-called next-generation hardware. Not so this time. Consequently a vacuum exists in the marketplace. The labels have given no indication that they are developing a new format that will take advantage of the capabilities of a surround sound system.
