Gov. Mike Rounds called a special session for Friday to ask the Legislature to appropriate money from the general fund to help pay for a temporary laboratory a mile underground that could later become a permanent national facility.
South Dakota recently signed an agreement with the Homestake Mining Co. to acquire a mine that is being converted into a temporary lab to study physics and earth science. Rounds will ask the Legislature to appropriate $16.4 million to fund the facility. The National Science Foundation will later choose between the Homestake mine and Colorado's Henderson mine as the site for a permanent deep underground lab.
