When the indomitable Italian explorer Christopher Columbus safely navigated his three ships across the Atlantic Ocean to the large island to be called Hispaniola in December 1492, he defied conventional wisdom and opened a new and seemingly limitless vista of Earth's potential.
Little could he have imagined that as he planted the flag of Spain's King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, he would plant the seeds that three centuries later would blossom into a constitutional republic and a democracy that would amaze the world.
