Oregon's leading gay-rights group is stepping away from the ballot-measure frenzy for the time being.

Basic Rights Oregon announced Friday it will not pursue an initiative next year that would allow civil unions for same-sex couples or ban discrimination based on sexual orientation.

The group said it will sit out the 2006 ballot-measure season, and will instead devote the next three years to building its membership, electing supportive political candidates and educating the public about its issues, spokeswoman Rebekah Kassel said.
