For many young adults, the conclusion of high school begins a period in the life course characterized by higher levels of autonomy and a series of future oriented decisions (Feldman and Elliott 1990). The months following high school graduation represent a period of newly found freedom that is in stark contrast to the prior 13 years of formally structured schooling.
