The classic wine-buying advice that I, like many other writers, give to consumers is: "Explain how much you want to spend and what foods you plan to eat, so that your wine merchant can recommend an appropriate wine." Not to put any pressure on you, but while a sommelier needs to know his or her own menu and wine list, wine retailers presumably should know every wine they carry and every conceivable food that a customer might plan to serve with any of them.
