Blue flags on clean beaches throughout the EU should be flying more prominently following an October 12 agreement between the Council of Ministers, European Parliament and European Commission on bathing water quality standards. The deal effectively wraps up the conciliation procedure on the proposal to tighten up the current Bathing Water Directive which dates back to the 1970s. The Parliament has won through with its insistence on strengthening the terms for informing the public and enhancing public involvement in clean beach and marina campaigns, in particular requiring a better posting of signs.
