Most corporate application developers find the best way to implement decision support systems (DSS) is to separate databases optimized from decision support from production databases optimized for online transaction processing (OLTP). The three primary reasons for the separation are that the two systems need different types of data, decision support queries can lock up production databases, and decision support applications often use data from many sources that must be tied together.
