Just as the annual Tribute in Light commemorates the World Trade Center in New York with two beams of light, a permanent art project in the planning stages will pay tribute to the two monumental Buddhas that were destroyed by the Taliban in Bamiyan Province, Afghanistan, just six months before the 9/11 terrorist attacks [see "Artworld," Apr. '01]. Conceived by the California-based Japanese artist Hiro Yamagata, known for his spectacular light installations, the Bamiyan proposal would consist of 140 projections of statues of Buddha across the 4 miles of cliffs where the originals once stood.
