When Scott Palmer established his utility construction business three years ago, he never thought he'd find himself inside a hotel with his horizontal directional drilling (HDD) machine installing a 6-inch storm sewer line.
The concept of directional drilling is nothing new to Palmer, who worked for another utility construction company for more than 15 years before branching out on his own. In fact, Palmer says the company, which specialized in fiber optic installation, was at its height when the economy began to slump after Sept. 11, 2001. That's when Palmer decided to try something new.
