Article: Senate Defense Authorization Bill Could Become Amendment To Spending Bill.

Facing a crowded legislative calendar and several controversial amendments, the Senate may take the unusual step of attaching the $441 billion 2006 defense authorization bill to the upcoming defense spending bill as an amendment.

Sen. John Warner (R-Va.), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC), said discussions were set for this morning with Senate leaders about how to resume debate on the defense bill, which was tabled in July. He said options included: debating the full bill with a limit on amendments or, as last resort, attaching it to the 2006 defense appropriations bill.
