WHY WOULD anyone want to believe that William Shakespeare didn't write the plays ascribed to William Shakespeare? From the early 1590s onwards, plays and poems appeared with his name attached. At around the same time, people began to record their admiration for his works, and rivals started to make catty comments about how good he was. His contemporaries never expressed any doubts that he wrote what he said he wrote, although some university-educated men clearly were afraid that this young upstart was taking over their show.
We don't have any plays in manuscripts signed by Shakespeare, but we do have strong evidence that he wrote ...
