BIRMINGHAM'S Roman Catholic cathedral is to be rejuvenated in a pounds 1 million campaign.

The Archbishop of Birmingham, the Most Rev Vincent Nichols, has launched a fund-raising mission to restore St Chad's, an architectural gem. The archdiocese also aims to make the crypt at St Chad's into a visitor centre and a space to house some of the cathedral's historical artefacts, which date back to the 15th century.

The St Chad's Development Campaign is due to be completed by 2008 to coincide with the bi-centenary of the original St Chad's Chapel.
