Oct. 18--When Janine Thormann started buying Japanese kimonos a few years ago, the Boulder dressmaker wasn't planning to sell them.

A self-described "fabric-oholic," Thormann planned to take the kimonos apart and use them for scarves, dresses or purses. She changed her mind as soon as she opened the box.

"I got them in and they were too beautiful to take apart," she said.

Thormann instead opened her business, Vintage Kimono. Thormann orders anywhere from 1,000 to 2,000 kimonos a year from Japan and sells them at festivals and conventions across the country. She also sells them to other retailers, on her Web site and ...
