VANCOUVER, British Columbia - For years Brett Hull campaigned publicly for a better NHL, where skill players could use their skill without some fourth-line hack who probably didn't even belong in the league hooking or holding them up and down the ice.
Now that many of the rules Hull envisioned are in place and the game is markedly better, he won't be around to enjoy the benefits. Hull retired Saturday at age 41 because he couldn't keep up.
There's some irony in there somewhere.
Hull stepped away from the $1.69 million he had left on his contract with the Phoenix Coyotes after appearing in only nine games with no goals and 1 assist.
